    Summary

In 1978 in Australia's Northern Territory, life is hard and people are isolated. Telephones are not yet a common fixture. But five women find a way to connect.

Sybil, the matriarch of Fairvale Station, misses her eldest son and is looking for a distraction, while Kate, Sybil's daughter-in-law, is thousands of miles away from home and finding it difficult to adjust to life at Fairvale.

Sallyanne, mother of three, dreams of a life far removed from the dusty town where she lives with her difficult husband.

Rita, Sybil's oldest friend, is living far away in Alice Springs and working for the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

And Della, who left Texas for Australia looking for adventure and work on the land, needs some purpose in her life.

Sybil comes up with a way to give them all companionship: they all love to read, and she starts a book club. As these five women bond over their love of books, they form friendships that will last a lifetime.

I was excited when I read the title and synopsis about this book. I had just joined a new book club, so I thought this would be a great book to read as I started on a similar journey.

Set in the late 70’s and in Australia’s Northern Territory sounded so different different to what I normally read that it intrigued me the entire time I was reading. The vastly different seasons, the not so well-connected telephone lines. It fascinated me, especially the landscape. The writing of the landscape and all things natural was lovely and descriptive. You could understand why the characters fell in love with it, despite being a fair change for a few of the characters that had moved there from England and America.

This book follows 5 different women who form the book club, and we get to know them both individually and the dynamos of their growing friendship.

Sybil was the motherly one of the group, just like she was when at home. Always caring for everyone and bringing people together. She was a great character and her love for the land as well as her friends and family really shone through.

Rita was probably the character that I felt that I knew the least, perhaps showing the distance she lived from the others. I did like her though, and her story was the one that surprised me the most. I completely expected it to go in a different direction, and I liked that it didn’t do that.

Kate was perhaps the character I related to the most. It was probably the changes between the places moved to. While mine was not as drastic, I felt I completely understood how she would have felt.Kate was very timid and shy, especially at the start, but she got more confident when her friendships grew, and she found out exactly how much her new family and friends cared for her when she was going through some hard times.

The other two characters were also great to read, Della was very robust, but also followed her heart and I liked that. Sally-Anne was also a wonderful and I felt terrible whenever I read a scene that her husband starred in.

This book is oozing with beautiful charm. The characters are wonderfully written that got me caring for them, just as they end up caring for each other. I was wrapped up and felt warmly welcomed into their fold. The books ending was surprising. I didn’t expect it to wrap up how it did, I thought I would get fluffy endings, whereas I got something more real and true to life, and I liked that a lot.
