It’s well known that Jojo Moyes’ bestseller ‘Me Before You” is one of my favourite books of all time, so I was excited to read this one.
Excited is one feeling, but I will admit to feeling a bit apprehensive as well. I don’t read much historical fiction, so I was unsure how I would get into it. Even after reading the prologue I was unsure how I felt. However this was soon overcome. Helped in part to listening to part listening to the audiobook, the narrators accent really set the scene and got me engrossed in the book very quickly.
I simply loved this book. The packhorse women’s library was a really interesting subject, and it tied in nicely to the books storyline which raised a lot of social equality issues. It was uncomfortable reading the inequality of both race and gender as it was in the 1930’s. However, this book shows that there were still people who believed that everyone should be equal and weren’t afraid to speak up.
Alice was a lovely character to read. I love how she grew from being fairly timid to gaining confidence to really standing up for all she believed in.
This was definitely helped by her friendship with Margery. Margery was a wonderful character she had a soft centre but very strong willed and not scared to speak her mind. She was easily my favourite character.
I would say that I wish Bennett was more developed. I have many questions about him, however I did appreciate the times we heard from his father’s perspective, even though he is horrible, and that’s putting it mildly!
This book is another hit for sure. Any doubts I had were unfounded. The audiobook was absolutely amazingly narrated, you are instantly transported to Kentucky and absorb yourself in the story.
